"floating curtains"
concept
“When we look down at the Earth from space we see this amazing, indescribably beautiful planet – it looks like a living, breathing organism. But it also, at the same time, looks extre-
mely fragile.“ – Ron Garan

The overview effect describes the condition that astronauts have experienced since the beginning of space travel when they look at the left behind planet Earth for the first time. Imbued with connection and a strong sense of responsibility, the perspective on the environment and humanity changes sustainably. Up there, the earth appears fragile and its beau- ty and transience seem so painfully tangible that it makes you pause in awe.

Ice melts, species die, forests burn, storms rage, water rises. It is said that the consequences of human actions are tragic.
With floating curtains we want to dare to engage in a material exploration in and through space that is intended to break boundaries in its dimensional expression. Visitors are invited to be surrounded, wrapped and clothed. Hems & seams that hold up. Rags and scraps are darned, quilted, crocheted and brought into shape with a tight stitch or loose thread. In floating curtains we want to master woven material, or let the material dominate us.

As part of the UNDERBRIDGE festival for urban art, international artists were invited to take their own work further in terms of textiles and to venture into rough, smooth or wrinkled paths. This transalpine group exhibition entangles contemporary art from North, South, East and West. It sees itself as a material cabinet of curiosities that is dedicated to the state of our planet.
